On August 8th, 1737, after sixty days on the sea, the ship "Le Jazon" arrive at Quebec City with the Dupuis brothers Gilbert and Jean on board. They are banished to Canada because of "faux-saunage" which can be translated as dealing in contraband salt. At this time, France had goods which were taxed such as salt. The "faux-saunage" consisted of passing salt from places where it was less costly to places where it was more costly. This tax on salt was called "la gabelle". Berry, where Gilbert and Jean were from, was one of the areas where the "gabelle" was the highest, when some of the surrounding areas were exempt. The "faux-saunage" was quite common in Berry at that time. The two brothers were convicted for the second time for "faux-saunage", so they were banished to Canada. On their arrival, Gilbert and Jean were admitted respectively 23 and 17 days at the hospital "Hôtel-Dieu" in Quebec City. It is written in the patient register that Gilbert was 30 years old and Jean was 29 years old originating from Moulins in Berry, France. |
